That ALL Day Bug BACK Magnesium/MSM Lotion - Bug/Pest Support
$30.00
Regular price $25.77
Botanical oils traditionally used to keep bugs off, on our magnesium and MSM lotion base. Sharp and green, for yard work and evenings on the porch. It goes on like a lotion because it is one.
For adults who want botanical oils and a real lotion base on outdoor days. One 3 oz jar.
- Zechstein Magnesium
- MSM
- Organic Shea Butter
- Lab Tested Hemp Seed Oil
- Small Batch
- No Fillers
- No Synthetic Fragrance
- No Parabens
- No Synthetic Emulsifiers
Why people use it
- Botanical oils, the traditional way. Sharp and green, and strong. These are the oils people have reached for to keep bugs off through an evening outside. Use as little or as much as you want.
- There's field research behind oils like these. In randomized human field trials, a lotion carrying 6 percent catnip essential oil kept 79 to 95 percent of mosquitoes off over a four-hour evening, matching a 15 percent DEET preparation. See the research drop-down.
- Soothes tired muscles. Yard work and hiking leave you sore. Zechstein magnesium chloride and MSM; the label lists ~280 mg of magnesium per teaspoon.
- Moisturizes after sun and wind. Organic shea butter and hemp seed oil, which is exactly what a day outside takes out of skin.
What's in the jar
Same base in every jar in the line. Only the essential oil blend changes.
| Ingredient | Why it's in the jar |
|---|---|
| Organic shea butter | The body of the lotion. It's what makes skin still feel soft an hour later. |
| Lab-tested hemp seed oil | 50 to 70 percent linoleic acid. Plant oils high in linoleic acid are studied for skin-barrier comfort. It also keeps the lotion from sitting on top of the skin. |
| Genuine Zechstein magnesium chloride | The magnesium. Bischofite, solution-mined from a 250-million-year-old Permian salt bed under the Netherlands, not built as a synthetic salt. The label lists ~280 mg of magnesium per teaspoon of lotion; that is magnesium in the jar, not an absorbed dose. Magnesium is bound by 3,751 human proteins (the human magnesome), which is why it's the base of every jar. |
| Deuterium-depleted distilled water | The water phase, and the carrier for the magnesium chloride. The deuterium-depletion step is Josh's own preference, not a claim about your skin. |
| MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) | An organosulfur compound. It's in the jar for skin comfort and for the sulfur it carries. |
| White/yellow beeswax | Holds the butter and water phases together and gives the lotion its set, without a synthetic emulsifier. |
| Essential oil blend | Sharp and green: botanical oils traditionally used to keep bugs off. The specific oils aren't listed on this page yet. |
Count capsules as your magnesium number.
How to use
- A thin layer on exposed skin before you head out, and again if you're out for hours. Chest and feet work too.
- Start with a thin layer, a teaspoon or less. A little goes a long way.
- Chest for the scent, bottoms of the feet when you want it on more skin. Thighs and forearms are the next spots people reach for. That's how people use it, not an absorption ranking.
- Patch test a small area and give it 24 hours before you make it a daily habit.
- If the jar separates, sit it in a bowl of hot water about 20 minutes, then remix with a milk frother. Repeat if it's still firm.
- Keep it cool and dry, out of a bathroom that swings hot and cold. Use within 12 months of opening.
- Pregnancy: we point people to Zanex Swap or Sleep Zzz. Under age 2: those two only, in very small amounts.
Sourcing & making
Every jar in this line is the same base: organic shea butter, lab-tested hemp seed oil, genuine Zechstein magnesium chloride, deuterium-depleted distilled water, MSM, and beeswax. The magnesium is bischofite, solution-mined from a Permian salt bed roughly 1,600 meters under the Netherlands, not built as a synthetic salt. Beeswax holds the water and butter phases together, so there is no synthetic emulsifier in it. Blended in small batches and poured into a 3 oz jar when you order.

Who it's for — and who it isn't
Good fit for:
- Adults who spend evenings outside and want botanical oils instead of a synthetic active
- Anyone who wants magnesium on skin as part of the routine, with capsules doing the real number
- Practitioners who want a clean topical to hand a patient: seven ingredients, no fillers, no synthetic fragrance
Probably not for you if:
- You react to fragrance or specific botanicals. Email us and we'll tell you exactly which oils are in this blend.
- You're avoiding bee products, shea, or hemp.
- You're counting on a lotion to replace oral magnesium. It won't. Count capsules.

The research behind the ingredients
Published research on the ingredients in this product, for education. These studies were not conducted on this product.
Essential Oil Blend
Scientific Reports · 2026 · RCT · n=approximately 72 volunteers across two field trials, plus 29 in a placebo trial
In randomized human-landing-catch field trials in Uganda, a skin lotion containing 6% catnip essential oil produced 79-95% repellence against mosquitoes over a four-hour evening period, matching a commercial 15% DEET preparation.
Genuine Zechstein Magnesium Chloride (transdermal magnesium)
Effect of transdermal magnesium cream on serum and urinary magnesium levels in humans: A pilot study
PLOS ONE · 2017 · RCT · n=25 enrolled, 24 completed
In a single-blind, parallel-group pilot trial of 25 adults, applying a magnesium cream supplying 56 mg of magnesium daily for two weeks raised serum magnesium by 8.54% versus 2.6% with placebo, reaching statistical significance only in the non-athlete subgroup.
100% Pure Organic Shea Butter and carrier plant oils (topical)
Anti-Inflammatory and Skin Barrier Repair Effects of Topical Application of Some Plant Oils
International Journal of Molecular Sciences · 2018 · mechanistic review
A review of nineteen topical plant oils reported that applying them to skin reduces inflammatory signalling, supports antioxidant activity and speeds barrier recovery, with shea butter's triterpenes shortening the time taken for wounds to close.
Evidence note: The repellency evidence is a randomized human field trial: a 6% catnip essential oil lotion held 79-95% repellence over a four-hour evening period in Uganda, matching a 15% DEET preparation, using the human landing catch method. That is category-level evidence for what a plant essential oil in a skin lotion can do at a defined concentration; this jar's oils are proprietary, so a field trial of this blend at its own concentration is what would make the evidence product-specific. The magnesium and shea base rests on the same studies as the rest of the line - a 25-person transdermal cream pilot whose authors called for larger trials, and a 19-oil topical barrier review.
FAQ
How do I use it outdoors?
Put a thin layer on exposed skin before you go out, and again if you're out for hours. It's a lotion, so it also goes on the chest and the feet like the rest of the line.
How is it different from the other jars?
Same base: shea butter, hemp seed oil, Zechstein magnesium chloride, distilled water, MSM, beeswax. Only the oil blend changes, and this is the sharpest, greenest one we make. It's also the cheapest jar in the line.
How much magnesium gets through skin?
Research is still catching up. One pilot trial saw serum magnesium rise after two weeks of a magnesium cream; a 2017 review called for bigger studies. People use it for how it feels on tired muscles and skin; we count capsules as the reliable magnesium number.
Why did my jar separate?
No fillers and no heavy emulsifier, so the water and butter phases drift apart, faster in a warm bathroom. Sit the jar in hot water about 20 minutes, then remix with a milk frother. Repeat if it's still firm. Nothing is wrong with it.
Can kids use it? What about pregnancy?
Josh's family uses these on adults and older kids, and uses only the Zanex Swap or Sleep Zzz blends, in small amounts, for under-2s and in pregnancy. That's house practice, not a safety clearance.
Pairs well with
- Recovery Lotion — the one Josh built for his physical therapy clients
- BOMB Bath Salts — for the end of a long day outside
- Whipped Tallow Lotion — for skin that took a beating in the sun
Cautions
- For external use only. Keep it away from the eyes and mucous membranes, and off broken or freshly shaved skin, where magnesium chloride commonly stings.
- Store cool and dry, out of a steamy bathroom. Separation is normal in a filler-free lotion; rewarm and remix rather than assuming it spoiled. Use within 12 months of opening.
Lab Tested
Every product. COA on request, ~2 weeks.
